The London Intercollegiate Jazz Orchestra

Founded and directed by drummer–composer Finn Genockey, the London Intercollegiate Jazz Orchestra (LIJO) brings together exceptional student musicians from London’s leading conservatoires. The ensemble made its debut at Milton Court Concert Hall in 2023 and has since become a choice band for Whiplash Live in Concert with Justin Hurwitz. LIJO’s mission is to showcase fresh, boundary-pushing work by emerging jazz composers alongside rarely-performed pieces from the large-ensemble jazz repertoire, creating a vibrant platform for collaboration and innovation in the UK scene.

Whiplash Live in Concert

In May 2025, the London Intercollegiate Jazz Orchestra had the thrilling opportunity to perform Whiplash – In Concert at the Barbican, conducted by Academy Award-winning composer Justin Hurwitz. Playing live to Damien Chazelle’s acclaimed film was an intense and unforgettable challenge – every accent, solo, and cut had to be timed with absolute precision to match the on-screen action. Performing Hurwitz’s score in such an iconic venue, with the composer himself at the helm, was a unique experience that pushed us to new levels as an ensemble and showcased the versatility, energy, and focus that define LIJO.

Keep your eyes peeled for a very exciting WLIC announcement coming soon.

We are excited to be returning to Milton Court Concert Hall as part of this year’s EFG London Jazz Festival with a completely original set of new music and featuring a very special guest tba.

Hymn For Mum

Comp. & Arr. Finn Genockey | Live @ Milton Court, Nov ‘24

This is a piece I wrote for my Mum’s birthday, we just so happened to have a gig with the big band on the same day! This piece features the wonderful Aitzi Cofre Real and Scottie Thompson at the beginning and Rūta Sīpola’s amazing solo later on in the piece.

Tacet Trust

Comp. & Arr. Finn Genockey | Live @ Vortex Jazz Club, Sep ‘24

The title track for my debut album! This piece puts the trust in the player to get through it, full of twists and turns and features the rhythm section throughout.

The set concluded with Genockey’s fiery ‘Tacet Trust’: hot off the presses, this latest offering from Genockey featured powerful Vanguard-style writing with impressive solos from Scottie Thompson and Matt Hollick in the rhythm section.

The Tree Atop The Hill

Comp. & Arr. Finn Genockey | Live @ Milton Court, Nov ‘23

This piece was one of my first compositions for jazz orchestra that we debuted at our EFG Jazz Festival 2023 concert. Featuring the magnificent Josh Short, this was captured at the start of our collaboration in my quartet and also features the wonderful Matt Skelton, Joe Garland, Aitzi Cofre Real and a brief moment by Scottie Thompson at the end.
